A Lot Less plastic bags in the Capital?

by Brandon Glenn on March 10th, 2009

As reported by enn.com, Washington D.C. will be considering whether or not to impose a $0.05 tax on every plastic or paper bag used in stores. This would be a very considerable markup which would be great for the environment!
Disregarding the politics of the issue, the tax would discourage many people from using the store’s bags, and most people will opt for buying the reusable shopping bags. This is exciting news for any company wanting to go eco friendly with their shopping bags.
Grocery stores should be aware, however, that just because a bag is reusable, does not necessarily mean that it is eco friendly. Cotton bags are one of the most eco friendly bags because they are made from a natural biodegradable material.
